Independent Reading~Independent Reading, or IR, is slightly different in 7th grade. Instead of a monthly goal, students have a BOOK GOAL per quarter, meaning over the course of the year, they will have set, and achieved, four different Independent Reading Goals.
~Each student has a minimum of at least 2 book for their 1st Quarter goal. IR goals are individualized and unique to each student to support their abilities. ~The idea behind Independent Reading in seventh-grade is to help students grow and stretch from their previous reading experiences. Our goal should push a student to consistently read books that interest them, thus building a confident, life-long reader. |
Even if I don't assign homework, you ALWAYS have reading homework. We only read in class on our library day.
This will ensure you make your Independent Reading Goal.
We will conference about books every Tuesday, after the library. I will try to update completed books on Power Schools as often as possible.
Make sure you are filling out your Independent Reading Tracker and completing Book Talks after every book. If you do not complete Book Talks, you will not get credit for your books. If you do not get credit for your books, you will not meet your goal and your grade will suffer! No credit will be given for books that are not completely finished or turned in on time.
PLEASE REMEMBER: if your book also happens to be a movie, I MUST get parents to sign the Book Talk verifying that you read the book and not just viewed the movie.
The due date to finish a book and turn in Book Talk form is:
1st Quarter- Tuesday, November 2nd
2nd Quarter- Friday, December 23rd
3rd Quarter- Friday, March 17th
4th Quarter- Wednesday, May 24th
I MUST BOOK TALK THESE WITH YOU PROPERLY-
that means a middle school quality book talk AND a meeting with me.
You may only turn in ONE Book Talk the last week! Plan ahead!
***Please don't “re-read” books. I want you to explore new and interesting genres, authors, and novels.
***Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diary and any other easy low grade level graphic novels with illustrations will not count as a book.
***You may only read 1 graphic novel to count towards each goal.
HELPFUL HINTS:
1. Divide books into weekly reading goals by placing sticky notes on the page you need to reach by the end of the week. Consistently read for two hours each week.
2. Select a specific and consistent time for reading. For example, plan to read every night before bed, on the way to lacrosse practice, immediately after school, etc.
3. Set a timer on your phone or other device!
4. Use an audio book while reading along with the book (otherwise it's tricky to find quotes for Book Talks!)
5. Read with sticky notes nearby....Flag pages or passages that will help you with your Book Talk!
6. Complete the Book Talk form while you are reading, or THE SECOND YOU FINISH THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't wait for weeks to pass...you will forget important info :(
7. Chart your progress on your Independent Reading Tracker!!!
8. Take the time to find a book you like and are excited to read. It is SO much more enjoyable to tackle your IR goal with books you are actually excited about. You have a lot of freedom with this assignment, so take advantage!!!
***DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! Managing a long-term goal can be tricky, but they are a part of life. I'll help remind you and provide daily updates on this assignment, but you have to meet me half way and work hard. You get out what you put in!
